Members travelled to Copley, Nipapanha, Leigh Creek and Hawker to hear from local First Nations communities.
On 27, 28 and 29 May 2025 members of the Flinders and Upper North Voice travelled to the Flinders Ranges. They met with residents of Copley, Nipapanha, Leigh Creek and Hawker to talk about the work of the Voice and hear about matters important to local First Nations people.
Power insecurity, housing, and limited access to health services and transport were common issues raised across the region. Members also heard about the impact on community health and wellbeing arising from mining, poor road infrastructure, and the desecration of sacred sites.
The members of the Flinders and Upper North Voice wish to thank those with whom they met for their bravery in sharing their stories and experiences. The information gathered will support future discussions with local councils and service providers on how to address these issues. It will also be shared with the State Voice ahead of its meetings with the SA government this year.
Flinders and Upper North Local Voice members will be heading to Port Augusta and Whyalla later in the year to hear more from the community.
